How to Choose the Right Glass Shower Enclosure

Most bathrooms don’t fall short on tile or fixtures; they fall short at the shower enclosure. At Fleetwood Glass, we’ve spent 15+ years helping Greater Vancouver homeowners work through how to choose the right glass shower enclosure, and the right choice almost always comes down to four factors: frame style, door configuration, glass thickness, and budget.

Find out why premium glass materials are worth the investment.

Start With Frame Style

The first call to make is frameless or semi-frameless, and both are solid options depending on your priorities.

Frameless

Frameless enclosures use minimal hardware (hinges and clips) with no metal framing around the glass edges. They’re easier to clean, they show off tile work beautifully, and they hold up well over time when installed correctly. They do require thicker glass, typically 3/8″ to 1/2″, to stand without frame support.

Semi-Frameless

Semi-frameless enclosures have a metal channel along the perimeter of the door but leave the glass face open. They’re a practical choice if you want the clean look of frameless at a more accessible price point.

Match the Door Configuration to Your Space

Your bathroom size narrows this down quickly:

  • Pivot or hinged doors swing outward and need 20 to 30 inches of clearance, which rules them out in tight bathrooms
  • Sliding (bypass) doors work well where floor space is limited; one panel stays fixed, which reduces the opening width slightly
  • Walk-in designs with no door work in larger bathrooms when the enclosure is sized properly to contain water

This is where a site visit matters more than a spec sheet. Configuration should be driven by the actual room, not just what looks good in a showroom photo.

Glass Thickness and Why It Matters

Thickness affects how the enclosure feels in daily use and how well it performs over time.

  • 3/8″ glass is the standard for most semi-frameless installations
  • 1/2″ glass is the premium option for frameless, closing with more authority and adding a sense of permanence to the enclosure

All shower glass should be tempered, meaning it’s been heat-treated to break safely. What most people don’t realize is that even high-quality glass can fail under stress if the mounting hardware isn’t installed correctly. The glass is only as good as the installation behind it.

Thinking Through Budget

Price is shaped by several variables working together: frame style, glass thickness and any specialty finishes, complexity of the layout, and hardware quality.

Custom enclosures consistently outperform standard-size units over time, both in fit and in resale value. Knowing your must-haves before the consultation helps keep the conversation focused and the estimate accurate.

The best shower enclosure is the one designed around your bathroom, not retrofitted into it. We offer free estimates and work with homeowners throughout Langley and Greater Vancouver to get the details right from the start. Call us at 604-376-8661 to talk through your project.
